About Comanche

Comanche, a National Main Street city, is located at the crossroads of Highways 377, 67, 36 and 16-- an easy drive from Dallas; less than 2 hours from Ft. Worth, Abilene, Austin, Waco and Temple.

The area is a popular destination for sportsmen. Deer, turkey, dove, quail and duck hunters prefer Comanche leases. Lake Proctor is nearby for fishing, water sports, and golfing at Proctor Area Recreation club.

Popular area produce includes pecans,  peaches, melons, and a bounty of vegetables. The popular Brennan Vineyards on South Austin Street is a must visit. The winery is available for tours and the tasting room provides a great opportunity to sample great local wine.

Old Cora, the oldest existing log courthouse in Texas, greets visitors to the historic square. Old Cora sits beside the Fleming Oak.

The Comanche County Museum is open for set hours on weekends. Numerous historical markers and antique shops dot the area.
The county is notorious for the activities of gunslinger John Wesley Hardin and his trial in Comanche that lead to his imprisonment. The Comanche Public Library on North Austin Street has an excellent local history and genealogy section. Three restaurants are located on the historic square and others are nearby.

Local celebrations include John Wesley Hardin Days on the third Saturday in May. It is a family celebration of our wild west heritage. Comanche sports a show-stopping Fourth of July with a patriotic program and an unbelievable fireworks display in the evening. The annual Comanche Open Rodeo is in July. Pow Wow is a huge arts and crafts fair with family entertainment that occurs each September. Early in December, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a lighted Christmas Parade. De Leon, the second largest town in the county hosts the Annual Peach and Melon Festival in August. Gustine holds a well attended Homecoming on Memorial Day weekend that includes a great schedule of events including a rodeo.

This family oriented town hosts family reunions year round. It's tradition here. Some, including the Cunningham Reunion have been held annually for over a hundred years.
